While construction of a large scale, universal quantum computer remains a long-term goal for our group and many others around the world, there are other interesting quantum information tasks that we expect to address along the way. In the field of communication, quantum key distribution is nearing (or even at) the level of commercial viability, and quantum sensing applications are beginning to emerge. I will talk about the more abstract notion of the non-universal quantum computer: a device which does not contain the full power of quantum computing, but which can still outperform a classical computer at a specific task. In particular, I will address the issue of verifying the output of such a device, which can prove to be more difficult than some other well-known algorithms. When a factoring machine tells you that 21=3x7 it is easy to check, but how would you certify the randomness of the output of a Boson Sampling device? |
